Progressive Overload: The Science of Getting Stronger and Leaner

Progressive overload is the gradual increase of stress placed on the body during exercise. Without it, your muscles, joints, and nervous system adapt to the current workload, and progress stalls. This principle applies to strength training, cardiovascular conditioning, and even mobility work. Why Progressive Overload Works Muscle growth (hypertrophy) and strength gains are the result of the body adapting to demands placed upon it. When you slightly increase the training stimulus — more weight, more reps, better form — the body responds by repairing and reinforcing muscle fibers, improving neural efficiency, and enhancing metabolic capacity.
